During the early 1800s there was a strong fascination with anything from the far east.
Later Napoleon the Third would recreate beautiful papier-mache products, solid enough to endure time. This match holder is a perfect example of that period's labor intensive designs and craftsmanship.
The black lacquer match holder with its striker at the base, has intricate, gold painted, embossed details within its design. The faces on the personage seems like ivory, another amazing technique incorporated into such a small product.
