Before Thermos, water bottles and soft drinks in bottles, people would carry a small protective basket to carry their glass to the spring to drink the healing waters. One of those famous places was and is called Vichy. 

The glass in its protective case was also carried to the natural outdoor spas. I have a few more of these turn of the century water glass and carriers. Each glass and each basket though similar are slightly different.

The best part about them, other than the conversationalist piece that they are, is that they literally are molded to your palm for a perfect grip. That is to say the vine is well chosen.
