Exactly at four in the afternoon, tea was set on a cloth covered table, an abundant bouquet of flowers was placed in the center, and around it teacups and saucers, spoons, sugar and cream.
"Tea" was provided by friends who brought homemade cakes: Chocolate, raspberry, banana...plus a variety of scones, tarts and little sandwiches one of them was a mixture of diced apples, raisins, walnuts, cucumber, with cream cheese, served on a hearty wheat berry bread.
My mouth watered.
My eyes grew wide.
My fingers wiggled at my side.
An older woman, a friend of Carrie's politely asked if she could serve me, "What do you fancy? sweet or savory?" As she reached for a tea plate and napkin.
My inner child got the best of me, and I gushed, "I would like to dive on top of the table with my mouth wide open and scoop everything into one delicious bite!" And for added measure I mimicked my words and licked my lips.
The older woman's brow went slightly upward, she did not know what to make of me.
I think I might have put my goof ball foot in my mouth. Oh my, if only I could have said, "A cucumber sandwich please."
