Home Nest
Creating a home is certainly more than creating a nest. It is more important to care for what is growing in the nest than the decoration around the "nest." Creating a home takes a great deal of devotion to the needs of those gathered. A nest of love is a soft steady place to land and it is a place where one can test their wings without fear. With that said I must tell you something I think you already know but nevertheless I need to say it... I love "doing" the decoration around the nest. I love nesting a home with all that feather fluff stuff even if it is just a detail to the larger picture of nesting.
Creating a nest is definitely something strong within my family's genetic code. I come from a long line of women who were crazy for decorating, who created their homes with old things, who shared nesting ideas and gave wing to expression as easy as breathing. Growing up I heard the chirping of my Aunts, and cousins who spent hours talking about home, garden, cooking and how to raise children. Growing up in a small rural town lent to this, but having generation of women who thrived in nest building gave me the flight map.
Creating a Nest 101: First gather what you love. Honor it (home) as a prized possession. Let it sing to you and tell your family's story. Keep it tidy but not stuffy. Add humor in the details, and give room for dreams to hatch and freely fly.
Note: Feel free to add other ideas about Creating a Nest.
O' blue bird of happiness thank you for landing on my window sill, for singing your song, for showing me how to treasure the day. May we become a symbol of hope to one another, by the way we create our homes and give comfort to those who come our way.
Photos: Taken around my cousin Judy's home-nest. Do you think she has a thing for birds and their nests? The above photo is of my cousin's "creative inspiration board" which she displays on her refrigerator door. Isn't it the best refrigerator door ever?!
I love your colors! So fresh!

Hi Corey,
These are good words for me to memorize as we prepare to move. I will be selling most everything. Only will I take the things that sing to my heart. The things I can't part with.
Thinking of you! And yours!

I have see your nests in a couple magazines, Corey, and you really do have a gift for decorating. I like your little vignettes. The jar full of little quail eggs (?) is pretty and yes, your cousin's inspiration board on her fridge is terrific. What a great idea!

Ah, nesting. My husband and I are currently in transition -- I quit my job in the States to move here (to Paris) and join him; four days after I gave notice, his company fired him!!! (thus depriving him of his logement de fonction as well). Thank god we have a dear friend who has put us up for FOUR MONTHS now while we get back on our feet, but I long for when I can nest ourselves in our own place . . . thanks for the glances of beauty in the meantime.

I'm a nester. I think that's why I love birds so much. They take such time building the nest and then they nurture the eggs to fruition.

That is one cool fridge door! I think it's a Somerset Life idea waiting to be shared. ;-)

Monday is my "feather your nest" day, but I woke up without the usual spark. After reading your post I am smiling and encouraged. I think I'll go tackle that fridge and see if I can make it look more like an art gallery and less like a jumble sale. : ) Thanks for the inspiration.

First, how lucky you are to have had all of those creative women, chirpping their inspiration all around you. It certainly paid off!!
I love birds, nest and anything Robin Egg Blue colored. Hmmm...I wonder why that might be????
I love Julie's fridge!! I have something similar in the little area where I blog. It serves as creative inspiration for me!

Everyone in your family seems to have a gift for decorating a home and making it seem welcome. I just looked up from the computer to see the dog nose marks on the sliding glass door, the smell of the gardenn roses wafting inside. The heirlooms and finds arranged in the room and went...yes...this is home!

I love to create corners..
adding little bits and pieces..
changing them..
but..
I have never been able to keep them as I made them.. longer than 24 hours..
my nest is a bit.. too.. hyperactive..=P
whoever notices the newly arranged themed corner..
picks up something and says.. wow that look super.. and then puts it at a different place..
after a few hours it looks a mess..
I tried to keep them away.. but too much effort was needed....
now.. I try to make only one corner.. and struggle for it..
end I visit your blogs to admire..
lovely photos from a lovely blog-owner.. from a lovely nester..
loves and hugs..
from faaar away.. =)
and try to visit your blogs..

I just read your Somerset article yesterday (about naming all the things in your house), so this post fits right in! I love the fridge door, I regularly have to clear ours of pictures and announcements for weddings and graduations and all the other items that keep us in the loop.

So good to hear you talking about homes and nesting again Corey. Are you missing the broccante yet ? Jx

Judy lives in an art gallery of her own design. Whenever I visit, I feel conflicted about where to put my attention. It's a competion between eye candy and compelling company.

Yes I'm known as a nester around these parts too - I love my home, adding little bits and pieces, fluff and stuff! Having just had the last baby birds (house finches) fledge from the hanging porch baskets, following the Carolina wrens from the planter by the front door of the cottage, I now feel a bit like an 'empty nester' - my babes have flown!
These are gorgeous photos of Judy's amazing vignettes. I too decorate wih old canning jars, using them for treasures, now I must do something more beautiful with my ugly 'frig too - this is a show-stopper!
Corey, thanks for your lovely words about making the 'home nest'.

The women in my family are so anti-nest that they just wanted to fly around and not settle down. So I never learned about all of the things the women in your life taught each other.
I don't know how to nest, but I try.

I've never seen such a great fridge door!!! I have lots of nests around my home and they are symbolic of the attempt I make to create my own family nest.
