French Mustard

The French use mustard like Americans use ketchup. French fries with mustard. They like mayonnaise with French fries too, but mustard is the star when it comes to condiments.

Photo: 19th century crackled ironstone pot of moutarde (mustard,) sits proudly on a pedestal it is a Roi (King,) in France....but in my house it is a flower pot (sans fleurs pour le moment.)

That's beautiful, I'd use it as a flower pot as well, much to big for our usage of "moutarde" (Senf in German).

Hi. At a flea market(in Florida!) I bought a leather-bound French book on the history of Dijon mustard. I was surprised that someone had written the history of mustard! Jackie

Oh, yes, mustard. With steak, choucroute garnie, frites. Mayonnaise too, which is also a Belgian habit. The Belgians also mix ketchup into the mayonnaise as a french fry dip.

I bet your house is a real showcase. Somebody send Better Homes and Gardens over there or Good Housekeeping.

Strangely, I began my passionate love affair with moutarde while at the beach, holding my boyfriend's hot dog and waiting for him to return from the washroom. I dipped a fry into the mustard on his dog and BAM! I was in love. Interestingly, he is French and I discovered it because of him!

Mustard on fries? WOW...never heard of that one. Doesn't mean I wouldn't try it. I love mustard but more on hot dogs, hamburgers etc. I would normally put ketchup on my fries, maybe with cheese too...mmmm
I'm so hungry now:)

I've come to love mustard, does that mean I'm french now?

Mustard was one of the pleasant surprises for me when I moved to France. Many regions of France have their own mustard. I find it is much stronger than that in the States-more horse radish in it which can really clear the sinuses. There is a mustard boutique in Paris and Dijon called Maille Mustard full of many different varieties of mustard, their own vinegar and spices and beautiful little mustard containers for the table. I found out that mustard used to be a beauty product for the skin and that vinegar is a natural antibiotic. Who knew?

My french bloodline must be coming out strong in this area, because my favorite for dipping french fried is mayo & mustard mixed! Yummo!

I am laughing! On my last trip to Paris I bought an enormous crock of moutarde
at Maille... my brother goes there frequently and I always send my crock with him for a refill!!!!

Very interesting that you eat mustard with fries!! Who would of thought!I like roasted garlic aioli with fries!

Corey,
I like mustard on a lot of things, but I've never tried it on french fries. I did however try mayonaise on french fries for the first time this past Oct. Up in Quebec.

My mother used to tell us that she used to eat mustard and onion sandwiches when she was growing up.

It's one way to add a little spice to your life.

Gorgeous pot! Here is a great mustard. . .wasabi lime. Mmmm it is so yummy!! http://www.mcness.com/Household/product.asp?_id=12&507.3816&

Mustard with french fries? Well, I do like mayonnaise with my fries so perhaps I will give mustard a try next time.

Wonderful yellow flowers field I wish I was there.

Such a charming little pot!! Though I have to admit I cannot imagine french fries with manyonaisse... But I assume French mayonaisse is different from the stuff we buy here in the US?

Oh, thank you as well for your kind comment on my blog!! :)

I like this pot. It is sturdy and proud!
I have an old french marmite pot that stands on a shelf in my sitting room. You have encouraged me to re- admire it this morning. Thanks C.

my son would fit right in...he's quite the mustard man...

How I love mustard! preferably the Dijon one, original recipe. I actually spoon it out of the jar and eat it like one would savor jam. Can you tell I'm French... or just a bit... huh... strange? :-)

My fav when in France is the mayonnaise with Dijon mustard already in it!Ummmmmm!!!!

Gotta love the mayo and Fries!! That is also a Dutch or Belgian thing isn't it? Not sure I could handle mustard and fries.

OMG - I'd forgotten all about the mayonnaise and fries combination!

If you *did* live in that house, what would you plant to bloom once the mustard faded?

Oh yes! A jar of mustard, please... any kind will do!
We love it here, especially with meat (lamb chops, steaks, sausages...)
It's the queen of our BBQs!

Following my theme one French phrase a day, here is an expression: "La moutarde me monte au nez" (=I'm getting angry")

What a glorious mustard field, the farmers all used to grow mustard round here for Colmans but now the yellow flowers tend to be rape seed. Wonderful use for a beautiful old pot, we keep all our little mustard tins to keep bits and bobs in.

Thanks for the bright yellow flowers to begin my day!

Moutarde over ketchup every time pour moi..!
Though for french fries it has to be mayo.

Moutarde adds to the spice of life..

Ode to a mustard jar.
Even though you are afar...
Missing your contents,
It's rather bizarre.
Who's run off with your goo?
Is it in the bean stew?

OOH yes Good mustard! I don't like ketchup! & only use MUSTARD* xo

Mustard on french fries? Yick.

What a beautifully simple pot ... I bet it looks gorgeous with flowers! Your photography always has such a quiet elegance about it. Much peace, JP

OH jar of yonne
Mustard!
Be on your guard!
All is not bonne...
Someone's stolen
Your yellow stuff!
Eating fries in the buff :O

Oh! Those yellow fields... so wonderful! That colour - amazing. How I wish I could be there. If I get up real close to the screen do you think it will help?
see you, g

What a massive pot for mustard! At least French mustard is a whole lot milder than English mustard, but you using it as a flower pot is a nice idea.

Love mustard but I'll take my fries plain no matter what country I'm in.

I love mayonaise on french fries!! Not much of a mustard fan though. Love the pot!!

my husband loves the mustard.. he tries different receipes of mustards.. by adding pickles juice..=)) different herbs.. some are a ''réussite''
love the pot.. would be perfect with flowers..

hmmm, I like all condiments equally. Loved the last post with the lovely hat and the dainty mouth. :)

In our house, it's mustard, not ketchup--but a rival French brand . . .

Is that photo with those beautiful yellow flowers your home? Gorgeous! Nel

TONGUE IN CHEEK RESPONDS: I wish!
